Suicidal thoughts and mental health of dental practitioners
Scientific Programme (On Demand)
Session Description
Suicidal thoughts and mental health of dental practitioners
1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness this year, and yet 60% of people with a mental illness will not seek help. The stigma association with mental illness is a significant barrier to seeking care. Dentistry is a stressful profession, and the stressors inherent in the provision of dental care can contribute to burnout, depression, anxiety disorder and suicide. Our research into the mental health of Australian dental practitioners shows a higher burden of mental illness and suicidal ideation than the general population. Normalising discussions about mental health, improving psychological safety in the workplace and reducing stigma are critical, and measures to improve wellbeing are important for the long-term health of dental practitioners.
