The mechanisms that underly acute and chronic pain are very different. As such, clinicians understand that their approach to the management of chronic pain needs to be done within a biopsychosocial framework. This lecture reviews some of the physiological take homes of the acute to chronic pain transition process and how this informs our management of patients with chronic pain.
