Session Description

Streptococcus mutans causes systemic diseases
Streptococcus mutans, known to be a major pathogen of dental caries, is occasionally isolated from the blood of the patents with infective endocarditis (IE). It has been widely reported that invasive dental treatment such as tooth extraction causes bacteremia, leading to infective endocarditis. Furthermore, S. mutans expressing a cell surface collagen-binding protein (Cnm) has been shown to cause IE after invading the bloodstream. Studies performed thereafter also demonstrated that Cnm-positive S. mutans is associated with aggravation of cerebral hemorrhage, a major complication of IE.

Learning Objectives
  • Understand the existence of oral conditions in children with systemic diseases
  • Distribute knowledge related to the existence of many cases of undiagnosed hypophosphatasia, which can be revealed by findings of special oral conditions
