Maintaining periodontal health is the key to avoid periodontitis and preserving a healthy dentition for a lifetime. Organization of a general dental practice to effectively achieve such goal for most patients is challenging. This lecture will review the key knowledge that is at the basis of the screening, diagnosis, and care pathways that need to be implemented for effective prevention. In terms of periodontal health, a key remit of general practice includes the early detection of subjects with periodontitis and their effective management before accumulated damage brings the patient to stage III or grade C periodontitis.
