A Professor Emeritus in Microbiomics, Professor Lakshman Samaranayake is the Past Dean of Dentistry, University of Hong Kong,  as well as the School of Dentistry, University of Queensland, Australia. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the  International Dental Journal. which is the flagship journal of the FDI International Dental Federation. Professor Samaranayake is the author of over 450 communications cited over 30,500 times (h-index 95), as well as the author of seminal oral microbiology texts used by dental students and postgraduates the world over. He was also a past Chairman of the Science Committee, and a member of the FDI Council.
