The perio-ortho interface: from examination to management
A thorough pre-orthodontic examination involves assessment of both extraoral and intraoral soft and hard tissues. The periodontium acts as the medium through which tooth movement is facilitated. Dr Kamel will discuss key periodontal elements that influence orthodontic treatment decisions. These include assessment of periodontal health, tissue morphotype, frenal attachments, soft tissue deficiencies, and impacted or missing tooth units. She will deliberate on various modern periodontal treatment modalities utilised to manage such conditions prior to, during and after the completion of orthodontic care. She will explore situations in which orthodontics can facilitate periodontal stabilisation and the rehabilitation of the periodontally-compromised dentition.
