Bio-active restorative materials – what are they and their clinical benefits?
Recently, several restorative materials on the market are claimed to be “bio-active” based on their ability to induce remineralization by release of fluoride or phosphate ions. However, “bio-active” restoratives can be defined as ones to demonstrate various functions useful for long-term success of restorative treatment, e.g. stimulation of cellular/tissue responses or control of microbiological species. In fact, restorative materials with antibacterial/anti-biofilm effects attract much attention and some products are commercially available. In this presentation, significant features of newly categorized “bio-active” restorative materials will be explained to help understand what they are and also to learn their clinical benefits.
