Radiological examination of the patient with orofacial pain
Scientific Programme (On Demand)
Session Description
Radiological examination of the patient with orofacial pain
Most dento-alveolar related orofacial pain can be diagnosed clinically, supported by intraoral and panoramic radiography. However, there are instances where the cause of pain is not clinically obvious and 2D imaging is equivocal. The evidence-based application of intraoral and panoramic radiography as well as more advanced imaging modalities in orofacial pain diagnosis, including cone beam CT, multi-slice (multi-detector) CT and MRI, will be discussed. Multiple cases will be used to explore the optimal test for various clinical scenarios, highlighting the strengths and limitations of each technique.

Learning Objectives
- Understand the principles behind prescribing the optimal radiological test for the common and some less common orofacial pain presentations.
- Understand the strengths and limitations of modalities employed in pain diag
- Recognise the limitations of the various techniques in ruling out dento-alveolar causes of orofacial pain.
