ADA/PFA National Emerging Young Lecturer Award 2023
Pfa Emerging Young Lecturer Program (On Demand)
Session Description
Congratulations on being selected by your State ADA Branch to represent them at the National Emerging Young Lecturer Award competition final. We are very excited to hear the great speakers of the future and hope that you enjoy the experience.
The Award
In 2023, the ADA/PFA National Emerging Young Lecturer Award will be held in conjunction with FDI at the World Dental Congress in Sydney.
The Pierre Fauchard Academy is providing a prize of $5000 for the winner, with the title PFA National Emerging Young Lecturer. A second encouragement prize of $1000 will also be awarded.
ADA Inc is very generously supporting this competition with assistance for travel and accommodation costs. This process is completely independent of the competition itself and entrants wishing to apply for such support should do so by emailing accounts@ada.org.au for further information.
Schedule
The competition will take place in Room C411 of the International Convention Centre and candidates will be required to deliver a 15-minute presentation before a judging panel. Five minutes will be allocated for questions after each presentation. The schedule has been developed to allow time for judging and managing any IT issues.
Timing will be monitored by the competition emcee, Dr Norah Ayad (Section Head, Queensland).
The topic of the presentation is entirely at the discretion of each competitor; judging criteria may assist in developing the topic (see below).
The competition will commence at 9am and will proceed as follows:
8:30am - Entrants arrive and IT check completed
9:00am - Opening comments - Norah Ayad (PFA Section Head, Queensland)
9:10am - Dr Alexander Khominsky (ADA Vic/Tas)
9:40am - Dr Selena Liu (ADA NSW/ACT)
10:10am - Dr Harry Perkins (ADA SA)
10:40am - Morning tea
11:00am - Dr Vanessa Cho (ADA WA/NT)
11:30am - Cpt Benjamin Gad (ADA Q)
12:00pm - Judges convene for discussion
12:20pm - Winners announced by Dr Stephen Liew, President, ADA Inc
Judging Panel
The Judging Panel will comprise:
Dr Stephen Liew, ADA Inc President
Conjoint Associate Professor Shane Fryer OAM, World Dental Congress Chairman
Dr Mark Sinclair, Past President and International Trustee, PFA Region VIII
Conjoint Professor Deb Cockrell AM, President and International Trustee, PFA Region VIII
The judges’ decision will be final and the notes and marks regarding each candidate will remain the property of the PFA/ADA and kept strictly confidential.
Informal feedback will be provided by Conjoint Professor Cockrell on request.
Outright Competition Winner
Judges will score each candidate according to the judging criteria (see below) and the candidate who accumulates the highest aggregate score will be determined the winner.
PFA will provide all necessary documentation to enable judges to fulfil their role.
In the event that the highest scores are equal among two or more candidates, each member of the judging panel will be asked to nominate a winner from among those candidates. A nomination agreed upon by a majority of three (3) judges will carry the vote.
In the event that there is no outright majority agreement, the President of the ADA or his nominee will have a casting vote.
The ADA/PFA National Emerging Young Lecturer will be invited to present a lecture in the Main Scientific Program at the next Congress.
Encouragement award
Judging for the encouragement award will be conducted immediately following the completion of judging for the outright winner of the Emerging Young Lecturer Award. The outright winner of the Emerging Young Lecturer Award is ineligible for the encouragement award. Each judge shall vote for the encouragement award.
The candidate who receives the most votes from the judging panel shall be recognized as the winner of the encouragement award. If there are two or more candidates with equal votes, the President of the ADA or his nominee will have a casting vote.
