Oral health impacts of recreational drug use
Scientific Programme (On Demand)
Session Description
Oral health impacts of recreational drug use
The use and abuse of methamphetamine (‘ice’ or ‘crystal meth’), a potent central nervous system
stimulant, has been associated with significant deterioration of oral health. While the mode of
delivery and frequency of use may impact oral health outcomes; other associated behaviours, such
as smoking, sugary beverage consumption and poor oral hygiene, also explain oral health
deterioration.
Having a better understanding of causal mechanisms enables dental practitioners to provide
personalized interventions and management of dental disease in this patient cohort.
