Can periodontal treatment save lives as well as teeth?
Fdi Session (On Demand)
Session Description
Can periodontal treatment save lives as well as teeth?
The association between periodontitis and a number of systemic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, is well established. There is also growing evidence that periodontal treatment can be effective in improving clinical systemic disease outcomes. This evidence needs to be considered in the context of the multiple co-morbidities that are common to many chronic inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis. Inflammation is a common thread across many highly preventable systemic diseases that have a major impact on human health. In this context, our understanding of the inflammatory burden of periodontal disease is important in appreciating the role of periodontitis management as not only important for maintaining a functional dentition but also for enhancing overall health.
