Session Description

Antiseptics in periodontal and implant therapy: facts and fiction
Antiseptics are adjuncts frequently used to enhance treatment outcomes in periodontal and implant therapies. However, there are inconsistencies in clinicians’ recommendations and prescribing protocols depending on training backgrounds, geographical product availability, and patient expectations. In an age of personalized medicine, appropriate evidence-based and guided prescribing is essential to ensure that the risk-benefit ratio is tipped in the patient’s favour. Dr Kamel will discuss, with evidence from the literature, the rationale for antiseptic use in practice, types of antiseptics available in the Australian Market, antiseptic mechanisms of action, and the recommended prescribing protocols at various stages of periodontal and implant treatments.

Learning Objectives
  • Understand the rationale for antiseptic use in clinical practice
  • Understand the types of antiseptics available and their mechanisms of action
  • Understand the recommended prescribing protocol and product for various clinical scenarios
